Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Support craft

Hi Jim R
Good idea with putting pressure in the axel ,I think a flexible pipe attached to the vent elevated with a ball valve should work well.I have used oil filled hubs for boat trailers what a plessure after years of use the oil only becomes slightly off color. With normal greased hubs the problem is usually when the warm hub is submerged it cools and causes a vacuum inside the hub encouraging water to enter the hub but with your pressure idea this allso could possibly be elliminated.

I built a L. F. Herreshoff launch, his Piquant design, back in the
mid '70s. The boat was 47' loa, 6'9" beam, and 2' draft. For the
highway trailer, I used 3/4ton pickup hubs (full floating) for a
tandem axle setup with 3" pipe for the axles. A heavy plexiglass cover
was made for each hub and was drilled and tapped in the center for an
1/8" NPT pipe plug drilled 1/16" for a vent. Normal 30wt oil was
filled to cover the bottom of the bearings. The hydraulic brakes were
hooked to a surge hitch. For the first launch, solid plugs were put
in. However, the axles went to over 6' deep and water got past the
seals. The next time Schrader valves were fitted and each axle
pressurized with a hand tire pump to a little over 5psi. The Garlock
oil seals handled this pressure and kept the hubs dry. After recovery,
the vented plugs were put back.

Hi Jens
Clever for the time.I see once the caissons were locked in place the water
was simply pumped out. After Vance stated that a K can only be towed at 4kts
my bubble burst .
Im thinking of constructing 2 water displacing pontoons with each pontoon
having 3 airtight bulkheads ,on flooding the central compartments the
pontoons should just be possisively bouyant, between the 2 pontoons a
winchable cradle which once the water has been pumped by bildge pump out of
the centre compartments can assist in lifting more of the K out of the
water. With the right desighn one could possibly have wheels with oil filled
hubs attached to the pontoons permanently to assist with towing out of the
water.
