The Iktineos referenced below were two remarkable wooden submarines built and operated in Spain during the late 1850's and the 1860's.  Replicas of both are on display in Barcelona.  Pretty amazing for the time.

the original "Ensayo sobre el arte de navegar por debajo de las aguas" is very nice and sometimes for me  funny because Monturiol explained in this book many topics that are discussed here in the list.  It is over 100 years old but still actual.   He made almost all of his equipment and explain it well.  I made a copy of the original from the library of Hamburg, Germany.  May be someday the Ictineos could be reconstructed and tested again.  Not only models for films like the one that is in the harbor of Barcelona.
