There is a pretty good explanation of zinc properties and reactions here. Basically, zinc is more reactive than steel and corrodes away. You can't weld it, although zinc anodes can be purchased with cast in steel tabs. For our purposes, you need them bolted and sealed against the steel, as they will inevitably have to be replaced.
