Alan,

The only value of the flange is for mounting purposes.  Rather than 
dealing with the complexities of machining a ring to conform to the 
curve of the inner heal, it makes more sense to remove the flange and 
glue on a ring as Greg suggested.  Or, design the mount for a 
flange-less dome.
