It's not the sound of a diesel motor running that gets detected when subs are submerged. Even small noise levels are detected. A military sub can hear torpedo doors opening, props turning, cavitation if there is any, and possibly even loud noises generated inside a sub. Water transmits sound very good so if you were banging around inside a steel hull the right listening equipment would pick it up.
