Hello Alan and Ray there are a lot of fishes that can produce sounds, about a third of known species can produce sounds, most of then produce it with help of the swimmbladder. The most known are of the groups of Scianidae and catfishes. They can be very loud. Many other acautic animals produce sound, the pistol crabs kill they prey with sound and if you are near you believe someone is shoting a gun. Best wishes Jürgen

Alan, No it is actually a fish also known as drums or hardheads (you made me do some research on the web: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sciaenidae ). There is also a description of how they make the sound.
