Hugh, I've been looking at this USB video capture adapter that Dick Smith sells.

Not sure of price. Looks like you can run your camera into a laptop with it.
This could tie in with Jon's suggestion of having multiple webcams into a laptop,
except have at least one serious camera plugged in.
