Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Hatch pressure

Hi Allen. I haven't put my sub in the water yet but I don't see where there is ANY pressure pushing the hatch open as you first begin submerging. Why would there be ?
Hatch dogs are used to compress the "O" ring on the hatch because the water might seep in a bit if it wasn't "snugged down".
The only upward pressure would be from the small amount of air contained in the hatch itself. My hatch weighs about 100 pounds and a rough guess is the hatch dome plus ring only holds about 3 gallons of water.
That could be an upward pressure of 24 pounds I guess but wouldn't be enough to lift the hatch.
When a "spring assist" is added to the hatch for easier lifting it would be OK to make it strong enough so the hatch only weighs 5 pounds, because the hatch dogs will still keep it closed.
Once the sub hatch is about 3 feet under, no way are you gonna get that thing open even without the hatch dogs.
