RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] submarine developments

David

The U.S. Navy's 1955 mini-submarine X-1 used a rudimentary AIP system in
which oxygen for underwater operation of its conventional diesel engine
was derived from the decomposition of highly concentrated hydrogen
peroxide. After a peroxide explosion in 1957, however, its AIP capability
was eliminated.

** The British subs were built using the German Walther system from WWII and
** were named Explorer and Excalibur.the forces nick-named them Exploder and
** Executioner for good reason.
