Back Burner literally refers to a stove where you have heating elements in
front and in back.
To put something on the "back burner" implies that you are going to give it
less thought, leave it on low heat and come back to it later, like in
cooking where the pan in front gets the most attention.

As far as foreigner goes, well - that is just a matter of perspective.

Otherwise, I totally agree with your point of view here, i.e. optics and
electronics are both extremely fascinating stuff.

Or in more general terms, I guess it's due to the vast combination of so
many branches of technology that actually makes the submarine so much more
interesting for me, than...
