Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Nuytco sub observations

Jon:
The advantages of using pressed sections from a single die are exactly as Alex points out. If the press is big enough and the metal soft enough, there is no requirement for the segments to be heated. The thinning is negible and the sphericity (critical for agency classing) is well controlled. The male/female die sections can be much smaller in area than the finished segment - the segment (usually circular) is pressed and rotated/shifted and pressed again until the entire piece conforms to the female section curve. We use a similar process for the small sphere of the DeepWorker. The plate is cut into cicles, pressed into semi-spheres (sectors of a sphere) and then cut into 'fat squares) in a precision jig and put together much like a soccer ball. As far as I'm aware, Nuytco is the only sub builder that does it this way, since it is more labor intensive and requires a precise cut from the domed sectors - but the result is a perfectly aligned set of segments to form a sphere.

It looks like that spehrical section is both pressed and welded. That's the
best of both worlds. The spherical end is not too big to where metal thinning
is a a problem. And the welded sections look like they were made on the same
press to match the same sphere. That way everything fits together perfectly,
and only a few sections are needed!

2) I noticed that the back head on Phils newest sub ( click this link

segmented rather than pressed from a single blank of steel. I remember
Phil talking about this but don't recall the benefit of using segments.
I've been looking at Prescor in Tulsa Oklahoma who heat steel blanks and
then press them into the correct shape with a die. Is there any reason
this is not as viable as a segmented head?
