I've been waiting for years for a breakthrough in betavoltaics. Looks 
like there's been one.

For a sub that is used only seldom, and for relatively short outings, a 
betavoltaic "battery" with a very low rating - say, a couple of hundred 
watts - can recharge the storage battery between excursions, and keep it 
charged, and keep doing that for years.
