[PSUBS-MAILIST] need assistance with hull optimization algorithm



I need some assistance in guiding my development effort for the hull 
optimization program.  Specifically, I need to impose boundary conditions to 
reduce the number of necessary iterations of the program so that it doesn't 
require days to produce a solution.  One way of doing this is to restrict the 
possible material thicknesses through which the program must iterate, and I 
have done so by only allowing certain values, corresponding to preferred plate 
thicknesses.  To further restrict the iteration counts, I want to impose 
limits on the relative thicknesses of welded components, such as the ratio of 
the cylindrical shell thickness to the thickness of the stiffener web, and 
where fitted, the ratio of the web thickness to the flange thickness.  My 
understanding is that while welding of any thickness to any other is possible 
in practice, it is much easier to weld materials of similar thickness, and if 
this is typical in practice it would allow me to reduce the order of magnitude 
of iteration counts in the algorithm.  Thus, I ask for guidance from those who 
have designed or constructed hulls, and those with welding knowledge and 
experience, to suggest what the minimum and maximum plate thickness ratios at 
a full penetration welded T intersection should be.
