This is what we would need a passive, listening sonar for; one that can be
properly trained on a target (both the horizontal azimuth plus its related
vertical dip angle).

I really hope that this group (David & Co) will manage to come up with
such a system within reasonable cost.

In my own spare time I do some experimenting with a replica of a german
WW1 binaural listening system that require 2 (or 3) hydrophones to
determine a bearing on a continuous, single tone. However, I don't know
enough, yet... to tell whether it'll be of any use locating a pinging
device (in 3D), or not.
