Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] collision
avoidance sonar test results #1
To all:
This is a forwarded e-mail showing Kyle's testing results and attached
video. I know of everyone's love for anything underway so enjoy this one.
Kyle has gone to great lengths to test this simple system out and share
with us his findings. I applaud his efforts.
It should be noted that this simple sonar is only the "listen"
half of a communications console and is still under development. Actual
underwater broadband voice communications testing should be conducted and the
results shared with this group shortly as soon as it becomes available
Once all testing has been satified as to this passive portion of this
system, it will be shipped to me in Tn. for upgrade to full communications
status and the designation of console #7.
Enjoy.

Will do as I may be in Duluth in a few weeks. I tested the
sonar and these are my findings:
1. The sonar amplifies the sound of motor boats.
2. It appears to be directional.(a boat circling
around me was louder in the direction the sonar was directed)
3. It appeared to work better at 20 feet
deep or more.
4. The electric motors sound is also amplified by
the sonar making it difficult to pin point sounds as you rotate.
5. Even with the volume cranked motor sounds are
faint.
I will do more testing as the sonar dislodged from the
metal clamp that holds the rubber seal at some point and I would like to
retest. At this point unless we can eliminate the motor interference then
it is somewhat useless as a directional indicator but I would like to use as
part of a communication setup.
