Hi Jon. Ya, a nipple or a coupling doesn't make a big difference. I bet
there's male threaded ball valves out there, but it might be hard to find one
in Puerto Vallarta on a Saturday if I was diving the Sea of Cortez.
Another thought here is.....Welding a coupling into the hull puts a lot of
heat on the threaded portion of the coupling, where welding in a nipple the heat
is a small distance away from the threaded portion, thus saving the threads from
all that heat distortion. Plus.....If for some reason the threads get buggered
up on the nipple, I can use a simple pipe die to chase the threads down,
rather than trying to find a thread cutter for the coupling, again in
Puerto Vallarta on a Saturday. Maintenance in far away places is near the top of
my list as I develop solutions for this thing.
