Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Minn Kota's

Hi Frank.

They come appart really easy......appart from the shaft.

Take off the anode and prop. Unscrew the 2 long bolts that hold it all together. The endcap houses the bearing for the end of the armature and just pulls off (take care with the spaceers as they fall out)

Then the prop end just pulls off. The motor brushes will snap in as they are spring loaded. You can now get to the connections to remove them. Now you can just pull out the commutator assembly which is a bit awkward due to the magnets sucking it back in. Just push, it will come out.

The top motor controler part is even easier. Just 3 screws around the base. Pull it off and the wires can then be pulled through the shaft. You can also take that bracket off now.

This is the awkward bit, the shaft. I tried to unscrew it at first. Forget that, it will never unscrew. I mangled it so bad that it was all shredded and eventually i was forced to cut it off flush and dig all the bits out. The second one i found "the method" which is...

After removing everything, cut the shaft off flush, or almost flush and then tap with a screwdriver into the joint away from the threads. It cracked into 4 pieces and came out really easy, all nice and neat. I think the mistake i made was to try and unscrew it, it just broke it all and made a mess.

I just updated my site so the pictures are on there, its easier than trying to explain it!

Regards
James

Hi James. How do the Minnkotas come apart. I haven't tried to take mine
apart yet but if you had any tips on dis-assembly, that would be
helpful.Thanks.
I've been busy assembling the stainless ballast tank pieces for a few days
with many days yet to go but at some point will need to tackle the motor
modifications. Frank D.
