Brian & all, Full disclosure: I used to work at Desert Star. There used to be a few more "recreational" diver nav devices like the desert star sport/scout. I dont think there are any other currently being manufactured. There are other pinger/pinger receiver sets that are similar, but cost north of $2K USD and are larger. It's tough to beat the DSS products for applications like marking the anchor line or marking an expensive piece of gear. Although, since they all operate on the same acoustic frequency it can be difficult to use to mark multiple targets. For example if you want to find your buddy and your buddy wants to find you at the same time. Any number of divers can carry receivers, but having multiple transmitters in the water becomes problematic. The DSS sport allows you to differentate between transmitters based upon the pulse rate of the transmitters. You cannot do that with the smaller/lower cost scout. But if you are diving with a less experienced buddy (or child) you wish to keep tabs on then you can put the transmitter on them and almost always find them quickly. Banging on your tank is always a good attention getting method, but it's more difficult to localize than when using something like the DSS products. It would be neat to be able to come back to a location underwater like a buoy line so as to orient yourself. Also to locate another diver. The tank konking method is a good low tech tool one could use for some basic messages. Go to www.psubs.org and click on their icon in the left menu frame. Check out their diving beacons. They were providing us a good discount last year so let me know if you find what you're looking for and we'll see what we can do.
