Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] sonar research

Sounds like a mini-PSUBS conference shaping up in the Bahamas, in the spring.

Let's take the shipping issue off-line and into private mail. Based upon what I've read so far, it would seem shipping to Vance makes the most sense. Cost is less for shipping in US, and Vance can either bring them to Bahamas for testing, or test them in Florida. Either way, the units get tested and evaluated the way we want. We'll work out payment for shipping. Perhaps this is a good use of our membership dollars since the project will impact the group at large. I'll coordinate between Vance and Les.

Let's also come up with a "test plan" so we all agree what the environment should be (depth, distance) and do this testing in a way where we can document the results and post them. Jay and Vance both have valuable knowledge and experience, so perhaps after discussing the field testing over a bottle of rum (or two), they can provide us a summary report including the effectiveness of the units and any suggested enhancements or changes that should be incorporated. Jay? You interested in working with me on a test plan? If so, contact me privately so we can put it together and than post it publicly on the website.

Another issue that comes to mind is getting the "submersible-based" unit down to a significant depth. I suspect that Les does not have 300-500 feet of wire attached to his units. I'll leave it to Jay and Vance to figure out what material we will require and how much it will cost.

Someone make sure they bring a camera and document as much as possible. It would be great to have this "field test" on the web site so the community can get an idea of the work involved. Make sure you smile, but no mooning. :)

If this topic interests you, and you are not a member of PSUBS, this would be a great time to join and help us sponsor projects like this one. If successful, this project will provide a low cost do-it-yourself alternative to commercial products for underwater sub-sub and sub-surface communications. Your membership dollars will help make this field test a success and also help subsidize other projects in the future, maybe even one of yours! Join PSUBS today at http://www.psubs.org/membership
