 Hi Alec. I like that idea of a back-up collar that slides into place ( if I 
understand it correctly.) 
In fact, I like the idea of back-up and redundancy in general. I'm sure 
you'll get that thing sealed up, and with the brains of this group helping, will 
no doubt have a good solution that others could use too. This is one of those 
areas that I think most guys building a sub ponder a long time.  
I've seen the basic "packing" type fittings that George used on his boats, 
and it seems like that alone would prevent most of the water flow, but with the 
two additional designs you've described, I'd feel secure in diving with you.
