Hi Brent,
The insides of the tanks and heads were not coated prior
to welding. I did sandblast them to provide a good profint and remove any mill
scale, rust etc.
On the sub exterior I will definately use the zinc rich
primer as my first coat. Inside my tanks I am using several coats of epoxy with
adequate cure between coats. One of the drawbacks of zinc rich primers is that
they will tend to blister as they are curing if excess millage is
applied.
Because I am coating the inside, I do not feel that I will
have adequate control of mil thickness to to prevent this blistering, so I will
use several coats of Sherwin Williams Macropoxy 646. This would have been my
second coat anyway.
Best Regards,
Jim K

Tanks
Hi
Jim, Is that the high zinc
content epoxy from the commercial Sherwin Williams line up? I've been
meaning to ask you about that primer, since I was told about it from a local
guy and then I think I heard you mention it some time back. I was thinking of
using it on my K boat after the glacier thaws. Did you coat any of the
interior of those tanks before you welded them up? Your talking about coatings for
the interior of steel tanks, reminded me of a discussion I had with Cliff
Redus some time back. Last I heard he had not yet put a coating in his
steel forward MBT but was planning on using this KBS Cycle Tank Sealer
Kit. http://www.kbs-coatings.com/KBS-Cycle-Tank-Sealer-Kit_p_7-31.html. His aft MBT is
FRP.
Looks like your making good headway
Jim.
Cheers

Hi All,
I finally was able to pressure test the other three hard
ballast tanks to 1200 PSI. To help me stay humble the third one did have a
small weeping pinhole. Everything else was good. Now for the coating of the
inside I plan on using S/W Macropoxy.
Also finished the inside welding of the transition
cone and had Brian V groov the outside back to the original weld.
Good to finally be making some progress.
Best Regards,
Jim K
