[PSUBS-MAILIST] spam
I agree with Ian. I'm willing to hear about alternatives (privately please, we don't want to tip off the bad guys) but I think I've locked down the mailing list about as well as I can. There should be only two ways to send spam to the list now. One is to actually go through the registration process which requires two separate manual steps to thwart auto-signup mechanisms. Of course, once they a message they expose themselves and are deleted from the list. This prevents 99.9% of the spammers since it's not worth the trouble for them. The second method I won't tell you, because then people will use it against us, and is likely what has occurred to produce the spam message you referenced. Given the amount of data that passes through the server, I'm pretty happy with the lack of spam we experience. The bottom line is that we can't stop determined people who are willing to spend time finding weak spots in the software. We're a big target and people like to screw with us. Eventually they slip, can be traced, and then blocked completely.
Jon

?????? ?????????? ?????
What's your proposal? (i.e how are you going to implement a better mechanism?)
Also, given we only seem to see handful of these a year, is it
worth stopping work on submarine to fight spam? ;-)
Ian.
