RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] sound transducers

David,

The value in this is apparent, really very neat stuff!

Jay had mentioned to me a common interest in adding goodies, with not much room for the goodies in your average K-350. So yes, downsizing this would be prudent, but as a priority extra item, I'd say voice comm should be at or near the top. The only rival that I could possibly envision, being maybe Nav.

If I ever do this, I'd do a "Bird Cage" mock-up ala Alvin, and prioritize the electronics accordingly. When I've looked at the images of the forward hemisphere of a K-350, (Say Dan H's), I imagine it would be a real challenge routing everything operationally necessary along with a nice panel of stuff! But with some planning and imagination, it looks quite doable.

I've said it before, lot's of scientific disciplines and interests to pursue in this one hobby!

Thanks for the explanation and the pictures!

Joe

Joe,

To add further detail, these first four consoles are being made from old "Sonic Wave" fathometer enclosures and may not be suitable for smaller (k250) submarines.
Not to worry, as an effort to reduce this by at least half is already underway. The reason for the larger initial enclosures is that these provide adequate room for modifications and upgrades without the possible need to start completely from scratch. (get it up and running and work on making it smaller as it is proven of worth.)
For example, This form of voice transmitter is said to be able to handle 30 watts of sound energy... The electronics so far produced put out a whopping 7 watts only! So an upgrade may later be installed with much breater ease than finding addition room later that would utilize this transmitter more fully.
I will send you an attachment that will demonstate this exercise in making these smaller.

David,

Not having any field experiences and out of curiosity, this brings to mind a question regarding underwater voice transmission in general.

I've seen voice comm between Alvin and Atlantis, Calypso and the saucers, habitats,...etc.

Is this voice comm severely scrambled (distorted by the seawater), and then reprocessed by the receiving equipment?

Or, put another way, if I swim between divers with voice comm equipment, could I hear the conversation like I do prop noises?

Joe

   To all:

The transducer for solids from which can be made the broadband voice transmitters are available on e-bay under "underwater speaker" at this time. These are selling for $26.95 but shipping is being provided. This is not a bad price if you were concidering delving into this area of study.
With a singing machine that is battery operated, a voice transmitter can be made from the use of this. (It still needs to be imbedded in molding plastic to survive deep depths.) And you will still need a means of hearing the return responce.
It sure would be great to talk back and forth between two submerged submarines or to your support boat without having to surface first.
