[PSUBS-MAILIST] Deep sea submarine pioneer dies
Psubbers -
Too bad about Jacques Piccard going for the big descent - some of
you may not know about sub pilot Larry Schumaker's passing - a week , or
so, ago. He and Andy Rechnitzer were part of the main topside control crew
on the 1963 'Trieste' dive to the bottom - Walsh and Piccard made the
historic dive ( it was always intended that Rechnitzer and Walsh would do
the dive - and all the work-ups were based on that - Jacques Piccard's
father, Auguste Piccard pulled a legal rabbit out of a hat at the eleventh
hour and Jacques got to make the dive with Walsh.)
Don called me to tell me that Larry had bit the dust and he
remarked that he and Will Foreman were now the only ones left from the
'original fifteen' (the U.S. Trieste crew). I talked to Will the next day
to get him to do an obit on LarrySchumaker (to appear in our magazine
'DIVER',) and mentioned the conversation with Walsh. He said "Yeah, like
Don, I can feel that hot breath on my ass - so I just keep running as fast
as I can!"
Those of you that are interested can read about Schumaker and
Piccard in the next issue of 'Diver' (see www.divermag.com) and you can get
back issues to read about Rechnitzer and a number of submersible features.
Since I'm the publisher, you can be sure there's lots of stuff on ours and
others - sub adventures! The latest issue has a feature story about a large
expedition to dive the ' DeepWorker 2000's' in a deep northern lake to
study strange growths called 'Microbialites' - among the oldest 'living'
organisms on earth (these critters formed earths atmosphere) - the project
was co-funded by NASA and the Canadian Space Agency. . .why? because they
believe that it may be their carbonate signature in the fossil lake-beds
of Mars that will tell whether there is, or ever has been, life on Mars!
These are big things- looks like a huge coral reef colony! Google
'pavilion lake reseach project' for info (note: only one "L" in pavilion.
Is DIVER' some new dive mag? Nope, 'DIVER' is the longest
established dive magazine in North America!
Sorry for the shameless plug, but thought you guys might like to know about
Larry Schumaker.
