The laser technology is called LIDAR for anyone who wishes to google.
Another applications for lasers underwater (and prob. more common) is to use dual lasers to get a size/distance scale
on images. It's most useful on rovs where you dont have steroscopic viewing and need additional cues for size and
distance.
There have also been applications for transmitting data on lasers for high bandwidth short range communication.
