Hello Frank, I was in my local hardware store yesterday, and took a look at there large ball valves. The whole is large as you mentioned, but the nylon type seals look to be a perfect seal for are desired application. They only require a basic step groove to be machined into a new custom machined part. If one chose to go that route. The type of valve I was looking at was easy to unbolt and remove the seals. The nylon type seals should be much easier to pivot the ball on then many types of O-rings.
