Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Grain Direction in Rolled Plate

Hi All,

I concur with Frank!  I have a design and fabrication background, however somewhat limited. The only time I know of fabricators being concerned about the grain is when making a very tight bend on heavy material. In this case, the grain should run across the bend. When I was a manufacturng engineer (job title only) at a plant we did tests on some 3/4 inch thick steel with a tight bend. If we did it this way we got a perfect part every time. If we did it the other way the outside of the bend would start to tear. In this case the radius was only about two times the thickness as I recall, so it was an extreme example.

Best Regards,

Hello Brent. My thought on "grain" of steel is that, if you really want to spin the piece of steel so the grain runs in a particular direction, the grain needs to run along the circumference of the tube, rather than the longitudinal direction. Your greatest strength will be realized in that direction. Frank D.
