Hi James,
If you are " Mig" welding you must use Flux core wire with a cover gas ( "
Dual Shield" ) tensile strength of the wire must be 70,000 psi. Regular
hard wire mig is not appropriate for pressure vessel work.
If you want to "Stick" weld then you must also use a 70,000 tensile
strength rod , like E7018, or E7010( These two are the easiest to use to
make out of position welds). Never use an E60 rod on 516gr70 steel meant
for low temperature pressure vessel service( actually never on 516gr70
steel) , All welds should be full penetration with back gouging of the root
and then back welded.
