Hi Again Dan,
Thanks again for the awesome idea. Sometimes it helps to talk with someone
who has been there!
I made a manderal for my lathe this morning. The first attempt was a great
success with just mild steel in the same thickness as the stainless. While the
lathe had plenty of power I did need to put a spot of weld on the manderal to
get the chuck to hold the torque. I will need to change the front end of the
manderal to get the first wrap looking better. Except for that the coil is
exceptional with nice tight uniform wraps in exactly the correct diameter.
Thanks so much for the idea.
Best Regards,
Jim K

Frank,
Making your own is not that hard . Does
your spring look anything like a K350 (but maybe a little heavier)?
Most good (old) machine shop text books have a chapter on winding springs.
Just scale everything up , including the lathe. As you bend 316L round stock
it work hardens to just the right amount of temper( bent cold of course NOT
hot ). I made a pair for my K350 and they work like a charm. The cost of the
round stock and sweat equity. I even did it the old fashion way by hand on a
Hossfeld Bender , but I would recommend the lathe method.

Hi Frank,
Also anyone else interested. I have had a pair of stainless steel
hatch assist springs custom designed to lift my hatch. Mine required 150
foot pounds to lift. The springs are quite expensive but the price goes
down quite quickly as quantity increases. In the worst case they will be
$189.00 each. If anyone is interested please let me know as I plan on
ordering them soon unless someoine knows another less expensive
source.
Best Regards,
Jim K
