James - I remember what you are talking about: counterintuitive questions
regarding buoyancy. I don't remember what they were, apart from the one that
you refer to specifically.
In that one, the level of the lake will fall. If we can assume that the density
of rock (unspecified) is greater than the density of the lake water, then when
the rock is in the boat, it displaces a volume of lake water equal to the weight
of the rock. When the rock is thrown overboard, it sinks to the bottom (i.e.
its weight is no longer balanced by the buoyancy force), and displaces a volume
of lake water equal only to the volume of the rock.
