Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] teathers

Hi Doug,

I just wanted to say thanks! Back in August 07 you reccommended trollingmotorparts.com as a source for thrusters and other minn-kota things. I have purchased my first thruster for fit up and a couple of other items and found them to be exceptionally helpful.

Best Regards,

Having done many scuba dives in the area lakes, I have leaned to watch my compass and count my kick cycles.  ...all to no avail. I still come up and have to turn around to find the boat.   :)

I do not have any specific site in mind but I know that there are people working on integrating low cost accelerometers into ROV's in order to calculate position.  A search on ROV
accelerometer might turn up something DIY.  Let me know if you find something.

A low cost solution by integrating a digital compass, a sensor connected to the thruster speed circuit and a basic chip to run a dead reckoning.  Some school kids have likely already done this too.

Even lower cost is a topology map of the bottom, compass and depth gauge.   Works good in lakes with rough terrain, but would suck in Florida once you could not see a coral head.

Please let me know if you have anything good, and cheap. :)  Thanks --Doug J, Tulsa OK

Doug thanks for the link to drag equation.

I have not run the numbers, don't have them yet, but just looking
at it surprises me.

Which brings me to a point on navigation and communication.

Without surface antenna's any way to accomplish accurate
navigation?

I know there are ways of using GPS and WAAS underwater at depths
but I don't think the navy will loan me the equipment.

And also thanks for the side info on the page

thrust = 35-40lbs per HP

I am sure, this is the first simple conversion it helps us dummies a lot.
