RE: [!! SPAM] Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] silicone dielectric fluid
Jay,
You are probably right about that, the components don't take up that much space so it wouldn't be that difficult to make a small pressure vessel for that stuff.

Please remember that not all electronic components are pressure tolerant. While at Harbor Branch they had just completed an extensive test of a variety of components, most capacitors and some ICs did not stand up to pressure. In addition, it is difficult to make repairs to circuit boards and other items after having been soaked in oil or glycerin. I later had to make repairs to an Edo Western oil-filled towed sonar array at another facility; the circuit board could not be soldiered to and connecting the oil soaked wires to a new board was very difficult. You will probably be better served long term by housing electronics in a pressure tolerant housing.

A skimmer afloat is but a submarine, so poorly built it will not plunge.

To add to that - it is a good idea to pressure compensate oil filled
spaces - particularly those containing electronic components - to some
pressure above ambient. This can be accomplished with a soft bladder
somewhere in the connected oil system which is spring loaded to develop
a bit of pressure in the system. This serves to ensure that if a leak
does develop, you have silicone oil leaking out and not seawater leaking
in, and also takes care of the thermal expansion / contraction problem,
at the expense of a slight variation in system pressure.
