Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Propellers

Hi Guys. Does anyone remember the video of the ring propeller out a while back?
It showed a rope being sucked into the prop, and then by reversing it, spit out the rope. Highly unlikely, to me. As for power, I can see where there would be some improvement.
The problem I see is the complicated drive mechanism. There was no central shaft, but rather a ring containing a bearing race, with the prop rolling inside the ring, and the ring itself was the motor. Nice idea but gotta be expensive, and if broken, very difficult to fix.
I'm using regular trolling motors, and will be fabricating Kort-type nozzles. This is a proven technology, easy to make, easy to fix, and each separate component is replaceable for low cost.
If the prop jams, a shear ring snaps, and no motor damage occurs. If weeds, ropes, or whatever gets wound around and won't come off, simply removing the nut and pulling the pin lets the prop slip off, and then just pull the stuff off.
I like to keep things as simple as possible.
Having said that, I remain open and curious about any new thing that may pop up, so keep the new ideas flowing. Frank D.
