Dan, Although the range of underwater communications with the previously described method would most likely be for short range or close aboard, limited by ambient noise levels as you have pointed out, this could have useful applications such as communicating with a dissabled submarines whereby power consumption would be an area of great concern. Further testing is needed to fully determine the range with this system. (We may be suprised at how far this two way communication will go) Another "trick" of this sytem would be to aim the transmitting hydrophone high so as to reflect the transmission off of the surface back down to the receiving submarine thereby possably extending the angle of transmission.
