From my reading data on anti-fouling paints, some are more optimized to be used in freshwater, and some in saltwater. Some just slough off paint to keep things from attaching to the boat, while others do that as well as use copper and/or chemicals. They suggest painting the whole boat with a good quality epoxy paint and then add anti-fouling over top of that, on areas that will likely be submerged for long periods of time. Most PSUB's don't need anti-fouling paint, since they mostly live in someones garage or the like. Submarines like the UC3 Nautilus and the Euronaut will need it for the long term submerged areas. I expect they plan to, and will dive allot, but they are not currently housing a power source that will allow them to stay down very long term, and so I would guess there subs will spend much more time on the surface during there life then submerged. If I'm off on that let me know.
I like the look of flat paint on some subs, but for that I would use a flat non-anti-fouling paint top side, that won't rub off on your clothing or melt away, and anti-fouling paint on the bottom.

Brent Hartwig

Juergen,
That is very interesting, I vaguely remember something regarding some substances banned from US bottom paints. To my knowledge, all we have available to us is copper based.

Hello Peter and Carsten I hope the antifouling paint you are using is TBT free. Some antifouling agents are very toxic and they cause problems to marine life like hormonal disorders adn in many cases are simply deadly. The biggest problem is that some compunds are kept in the alimentary chain and we as final consumers of fish or shell fish are eating this compunds. Most of them are not deadly for humans but are related with impotence and infertility. I know is nice to have a clean hull but as a biologist I have learned that places where no bugs can grow are places where no humans can live. I hope no one is using TBT antifouling paints or other with cianyde or arsenic. Best wishes Jürgen

Peter,
You are correct antifouling paint does "slough off" quite easily. It's quite messy stuff. If I were to own a dockside sub, I would opt for standard topside coatings.
Incidentally, a neat trick to determine a new vessels true waterline, is to let her sit in calm water for several days fully fueled, then haul out again. This will mark the line nicely.

Carsten and others...
What is right...do you paint a submarine in antifouling paint from keel to top periscope, or only to surfaced construction water line ?
Did Carstens answer meant he gives EURONAUT blue paint up to this or is it the whole boat ? Anti fouling paints are not always good for anything else then antifouling - some will very fast get rubbed off if used on deck.
We have today all of Kraka covered with antifouling - but I am not sure if people generally thinks a boat in that style looks better with a marked waterline - last year Kraka was red below water - now all is dull black.
Comments wellcome.
Regards,
Peter
