RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Passive sonar

OK, I just went out to the sub and took a look. The cable has 9 conductors and the penetrator is a 10 conductor, so I do have one available for a shield. Currently I've got a foot of standard wires coming out on the inside, wired to the cable that came with the sonar. That cable is coiled up, so I'm not sure the exact length, but would guess I probably have 10 feet inside and about the same outside. It would be hard if not impossible, for space reasons, to solder the original sonar cable to the penetrator directly, although it would be possible to greatly shorten the leads. The run from penetrator to instrument could be about 5 feet if I cut the cable. There appears to be no grounding of the original cable at either the transducer or instrument end.

What if I find external braid shielding, wrap the whole inboard cable assmbly in that (including the one foot of plain wires), and ground to the hull?

thanks

Alec

Alec,
How long of a run do you have from the bulf head connector inside to the Interphase display? Are you just using the plain wire that came with the connector or did you solder the other end of the cable internally to the connector? If I understand you correctly, your whip from your sonar head coming to the penetrator has numerous sielded twisted pairs inside wraped with the impregnated mylar tape? Typically that tape is just used to seperate the conductors in the cable, there would not be a physical connection on the device. If it was shielding it would typically be a bair wire with the twisted pair or an actual shield, similar to what you would find in coax at which point there would be a physical connection. As for as a differant connector, I would not go that for yet, it sounds like a simple stray ground or ground loop problem. I have used the Subconn's for years and have pumped everything from HD Video to Imaging sonar through them with no problem. Every time I h! ave had a problem, no offence intended, it was something I created.
A couple things to check would be;
The potting where you joined the whips together, you might try a re-due on the external whip, I would recommened 3M Scotchcast 2130 for the finished product using a mold our a good shrink tube.
Check your manual on the Interphase and see if the display needs to be tied to the hull for ground.
Does the problem get worse during a dive? When I was working with the Deepworker subs in Hawaii we had a problem with condinsation inside the vehicle, during a dive the condensation would slide down the internal wall and go write to the penetration plate, causing all kinds of weird s%*t, which of course would go away when you tryed to diagnose on the surface. Turns out, the connectors were not water blocked internally. Replaced the connectors, with water blocked ones, and the problem went away.
Regardless of the fix, keep me posted, sounds like a good bug.

This hits right on one of my unresolved nuisances. I have an InterphaseVista sonar in my K-250. The product manual has dire warnings about cutting the cable to the transducer, but I wasn't comfortable putting the cable through a compression gland into the hull. So I went ahead and cut it on the basis that I'd rather risk the instrument's performance than the integrity of the hull. I used a Subconn bulkhead connector, and had the intention of putting the shielding through the penetrator by using one of the pins for that purpose. However, I found it impossible to do because of how the cable was constructed. Each of the conductors had it's own shielding, but they're incredibly flimsy tin foil thingies that all unravel and break up. The penetrator itself is not shielded, it's all plastic besides the pins.

The result is that the depth sounder reading on the instrument works fine, but the forward looking sonar image does not correspond to what's actually in the water. It doesn't actually look like electrical noise on the screen, but I think that's just because the screen refreshes only periodically. The sonar image looks proper, but it just isn't what's out in front of the sub.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. Perhaps a different kind of penetrator?

thanks,

Alec

Steve,
If you are looking for a simple gland, as long as your cable is water blocked, you can purchase stainless steal ones from McMaster-Carr. I have used the ones from McMaster on pressure balanced oil-filled (PBOF) housings down to 1000 meters. The cable has to be water blocked though. You can purchase water blocked cable from Impules, Subconn, our any connector manufacture. Falmat cable company makes the water blocked umbilcals for numerous ROV companies, they might have some in stock to purchase a short piece.
If your gland in coming directly into your sub, I would recommend a bulk head connector, unless they are pressure compensated, most will leak at or below 80 psi.
Hope this helps,

G-day everyone

Does anyone one in the group have any information on what type of through hull glands are used for video coaxial and power cables like those used on ROV?s or maybe subs owned buy group members?

Are there any good suppliers that any members know about?

Any help will be appreciated!

Regards

Steve Pearce
