RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] XS100 Duo Beta Personal Submersible

Greetings Dan,

You make in my opinion, a very good solid and valid point.  I very much enjoy interesting and/or beautiful designs, of all sorts of things.  Of course what is interesting and/or beautiful is in the eye of the beholder. I'm pretty well aware of what it takes to produce the very high quality CAD work and Renderings of those assemblies like Guillermo Sureda-Burgos and find them to be very high quality models. I wouldn't be surprised if he or someone else is in the middle of building them for real.  Of course they would likely make small and/or large changes to the designs to make them real and functional craft.

You will notice from the link below, that the Bionic Dolphin type vehicles, produced by Doc and Innespace are very futuristic looking hydrobatic designs, and yet they are real and functional to boot. They are not the only ones designing and making real subs that look amazing and futuristic.  What about; Hawk's Deep Flight Aviator DF-502-001, Paul Moorhouse's Alicia, Dr. Phil Nuytten's Exosuit, Deep Flying, etc, Exomos subs, Uboat WorX subs, Subeo's Gemini sub, Cliff Redus's R300, and so many more.

As for me I'm a dreamer yes, but also I believe, reasonably grounded, and plan to do a nice restoration on this K-250 and then scratch build a sub I call the Batic THUWG (Trimaran Hydrobatic Under Water Glider).  The Batic THUWG is roughly based on Karl Stanley's C-BUG (Controlled by Buoyancy Underwater Glider) and a canard X craft. It will have no composite materials, and will be made out of basic and easy to find and assemble materials.  This way I can build it within a reasonably short time for a reasonable amount of money.

Your sub Persistence is amazing and I have learned so much from it, and will likely learn more from it. It's a solid, yet beautiful sub. I would love to see it some day.

Brent Hartwig

Brent,

I appreciate your enthusiasm but remember, anyone anywhere, with any amount of knowledge in the field, can throw around "Concepts."   If done by a pro, concepts have a function but concepts in Hollywood were getting us to the moon in the 1930's.  Yes, we did get to the moon and the crafts we did it in were impressive, but were far from the concepts of 1930's Hollywood sketches.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, merely point out that your getting pretty excited about a artists sketch.

It sounds like your doing research and plan to build someday.  Great!  I have no doubt that eventually, if you stick with it, you'll be diving in a sub of your own design.  What I'd like to point out is, the more you stick with convention the sooner it will happen.  You have to ask yourself, how far from convention am I willing to venture and how long am I willing to wait until my sub becomes reality?

I stumbled onto something that is simply amazing. These subs and hydrofoil designs will blow your socks off. If not, you need more sleep. So don't look at these pictures sitting down or while drinking anything. You can't say I didn't warn you.

These subs look like they might be or could be made to be hydrobatic. I had been thinking about using butterfly tail on a sub design I was working on, so it's great to see one.

Personal Submersible Vehicles

"So called "dry-pressurized" submarines have passenger compartment separate from the water and at sea level pressure; the space between the vehicle and the outer hydrodynamic skin floods with seawater during submerged operation. The submersible's layout is similar to the standard seating arrangement of a passenger automobile. XS100 Duo seats two and XS100 Trio seats three submariners. The intended market would be luxury yacht and resort owners, those who are perhaps bored of a luxury yacht and wanting to try something new (the price of a 2 passenger model for a target depth 100 meters should be close to that of a limited production exotic sports car, i. e. around 400,000€. With the larger production numbers the price can come down to 150,000€). The subs eye-catching design seem to be firmly rooted in the best of a Fin & Chrome style of the 50s."
