RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Whale of a Tail

How very clever! I had assumed someone had an artistic flare for that sub but, that makes perfectly viable sense! I wonder if it was successful?

The S101 was owned my Sea Shephards, according to this quote from the Marlin Subs old website. I've also heard from the marina selling it, that it was painted like an Orca not to scare large or small whaling boats away, but to scare the whales away from the Native Americans trying to hunt them in a somewhat traditional manor in Washington State. I would like to confirm that data. Perhaps I will write to Sea Shepherds.

"Later S101 was operated for a period by the Sea Shepherds conservation society and is now owned and being refited by a US submarines partner, Ellis Adams."

James

I think that Sea Shepard actually used a Small Sub at one stage to do exactly as you suggested that they acquired from Marlin Subs in the UK and deployed it against the Norwegians. I think it may have been the very sub Brent posted pic?s of not long ago.

This year they (the Japanese) are after Humpbacks. They have no respect for international opinion and they are hunting them in an Australian Economic Zone. I think it displays the same cultural arrogance that led to their involvement in WW2.

If we get a change of government here in Australia which is likely at the next election due in October or November the alternate government has committed to using the Australian Navy to intervene stop the Whalers.

Let? s hope this happens!

Just as a thought, if one is to pursue such a course, I believe that the best way to effect them, would be to do as the Turtle did in the USA Revolutionary war, and to "scare them out of the harbor" so to speak. Ramming could cause your sub to sink, and torpedoing could have unforeseen effects, such as loss of human life, as well as tighter restrictions on psubs, as well as possible criminal charges for the captain and the crew of the submarine. While I am pro environment, and would like to see whaing stopped, I do not think that the end justifies the means. But whaling does need to stop. Sooner than later.

As another thought, I know that closed cycle deisels, AIP, and nuclear, are not real practical for psubs. I know that the movie, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen do use a submarine that uses solar cells to recharge the batteries. So, I ask, why not also use solar power to charge batteries? I would like to point out that it would be used in conjunction with diesel, to also charge the battiers, weather pending of course.

Sirs,

Harassing, ramming or torpedoing whalers is possibly quite legal. I can understand that Captain Paul Watson, Sea Shepards, claims it is

since there are UN conventions against whaling. Anybody may enforce UN conventions as the US military did in at least the first Gulf War.

If its legal by international law I am on.

Peter

I also agree that the UC3 is a magnificent boat.

I would like to point out that sinking whaling ships via submarine, seems to be something out of SeaQuest DSV. However I do agree with the idea.

Congratulations on completing UC3 to this near complete stage. She?s a magnificent boat and well worth the effort and sacrifices you have made to bring her into being. You will have to sail her across the Atlantic for the next P-subs convention. J

If you can install a few torpedo tubes I would like to hire her to deal with some Japanese whalers that will be hunting Humpbacks this season!

Warm regards
