I'm looking for a local machine shop to gouge the ''O'' ring groove for my
hatch. The designs I've seen look like a square groove accepting a round ''O''
ring. Is that what the accepted style is, or is there any advantage to making it
half round? The groove and associated ''O'' ring are to be 22 inch diameter. I
can get the ring locally.
Wouldn't a square groove leave too much unfilled space in the corners so
that the ring when forced down by the hatch under pressure would be squashed
into the square and not provide enough of a seal?
My son-in-law , who owns a machine shop, told me that most ''O'' ring
grooves on a flat flange type connection are hollow ground so a small collar at
the top keeps the ring in place. I'll be using a 1/2 inch cross section diameter
''O'' ring and he recommended a depth of 5/32 inch, and again, slightly smaller
at the top. Frank D. Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL.com. |
