Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Thruster ideas

I purchased 2 each; Minn Kota - RipTide 101 lbs thrust, on 36 volts, 46 amps, 1.79HP motors, (Part # 2316285) for $220 each, the speed controller assembly (Part #2774003) for $129.95, and the prop (Part #2331160 ) for $36.95 from www.trollingmotorparts.com Under $800 with shipping for both.  I plan to air compensate too.

I was considering MotorGuide units but be warned that the control circuits on MotorGuide's are in the lower unit and would likely be destroyed if air compensated.

But while I has chatting with the product manager he suggested a product from their partner Lenco Marine called Joy Ride.  You would have to put 1 ATM seals in the motors (those are MotorGuides) to protect the circuits but it's a good off-the-shelf twin thruster solution.  Go to www.lencomarine.com and click on "Joy Ride" in the upper right corner.  I think he say 2,700 for the package.  I'd bet a clever sub builder could convert the linear actuators to pitch the motors for dive and accent.

Best of luck

Hi All,

Sorry that I'm late to the discussion. I understand that oil or some liquid is much better heat transfer agent than air in a motor housing. I was planning on air compensating my motor housings and using minn-kotas. Since these were designed to run with air in the housing why would this be a problem. Am I missing something.

I'll appreciate any input.

Best Regards,
