Joe,
Why not just use steel for your frames? I know it would add a little more
weight up higher on your sub where you don't want it, but should be to bad.
Also I know steel frames would add some more overall weight to the sub to
get the same strength as the aluminum frames that you would have to take
out of the drop weights to even every thing up from an aluminum
arrangement. But some of the advantages are; no need for nylon sleeves,
cheaper, and easy to weld onto main pressure hull, and they add allot of
strength to the pressure hull.
Regards,
Brent Hartwig

James,
I have several choices, composite over marine grad AL frames, or sheet
metal over frames. Each with it's advantages and disadvantages. At this
point in the model, you see structures designed for either of the above.
The scantlings of these structures, are not yet determined but, will be
appropriate to an 12k lb vessel.
You will note, that the end cones are "developable surfaces", (curved in
one direction), as opposed to multidirectional in the earliest model of
NR-2, lower down on the page. This is to allow choice of either materials.
Composite over frames.
Advantage, Corrosion control
Disadvantage, Labor intensive, density variations, dissimilar metal contact
(AL frames / Steel, requires nylon sleeves)
Sheet metal over frames
Advantage, (Easy piecy Japanesey!), constant density.
Disadvantage, Corrosion control
When I have finished all of the conceptual design work, then the detail
design work will begin. For accurate weight and balance calculations and,
to take full advantage of the available software, I will use what I am
likely to end up with, composite over AL frames. Build em and forget em!
These are modular in design and will come off easily for maintenance of the
pressure hull proper and systems.
