Interesting read, but I tend to raise an eyebrow when anyone says
"shaftless propulsion." In truth (as far as I know), it doesnt exist except
in a hypothetical "pulsejet" type water jet and in systems that mimic nature
(like the "shark-tail" drive) utilizing some kind of artificial muscle.
I've seen vids. of the shark-tail work in a wave tank; extremely interesting
(runs by electrically stimulated artificial muscle fibre). And the water
jet exists also in a PWC scale I believe, but only as a power boost to the
main drive.
Anyways, "mermaid drives" (which is what this article is referring too)
have been around for many years. Many modern ships use them actually and
even some old ones have some form of it. It's nothing even remotely cutting
edge, but it's nice to see them try to adopt it on subs. Even if they were
to implement a type of "outrunner" system where the motor itself serves as
the shaft, it's still a shaft though... u cant have an electromagnetic motor
w/o one.

+ cleaner exterior and interior.
- Elimate hydraulics (internal and external).
+ I'm guessing the a noise and maintenance advantage.
