A skimmer afloat is but a submarine, so poorly built it will not plunge.

Geared towards military subs, but I think it's relavent for

home builders as well:

- Elimate direct drive.

   + no prop shaft.

   + no dedicated engines for propulsion.

   + cleaner exterior and interior.

 

- Elimate hydraulics (internal and external).

   +  I'm guessing the a noise and maintenance advantage.
