Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Great Update on the old K-250 sub in Sandpoint

The overhead is definatley a problem, but... honestly I think everyone here is bright enough to understand that they need to stay in the open water. But if the Grotto is used, then the local will definatley provide for support divers to try and keep errant pilots away. I mean, theres a bloody dome one could station a semi-permanent lookout in. A good wetsuit, some line for a wired radio topside and you could coordinate from both submerged and the surface. There would only really be enough room for one sub to operate at a time at the grotto though. and it really wouldn't be too much operating room for that sub either.

I'm really trying to get some firm information on a rumored section/pool off the rainbow river that some locals say exists that is about 30ft deep, but would require subs to navigate the strong current and shallow at places rainbow river. The rainbow springs state park was.... less than enthusiastic about the very idea. but if we can find this offshot and get to it by putting in at a private ramp... maybe. But that's a lot of hassle.

........Just warms your heart doesn't it?! The clear water spring, (grotto) would do the trick if everyone stays out from under the cliffs.

I listed only the places I hadn't got a firm "NO Way" from.

  George,

If I remember correctly, Palatka has some deep water readily available along with the Grotto. How about the other sites you mentioned in your later email? Will look on my Garmin charts to see if they show depths in these locations. I appreciate all of the trouble you have went through to compile this info.

I'll get it sent to you as soon as I get my laptop fired up.

Also there are images that you can see for water quality.

    George,

I never did see the images for central Florida. Can you give me a location and I'll look it up in satellite images.

Did you ever get those pictures of the central florida spots? I don't think I ever got a response from those.

      Hi Brent,

At this point, you need to take a number and that number is 2010. So you have plenty of time to finish that K-250. Here's the projected list of convention locations for the upcoming future.

      2007 - Michigan

      2008 - Rockland, Maine

      2009 - Florida

2010 - Idaho (in January maybe?)

Since we're on the topic, I might as well let everyone know what we're planning for 2008. In 2008, George Kittredge will be 90 years old so we'd like to hold the convention in Maine to honor him. The date would be set to coincide with the annual "Maine Lobster Festival" (usually in August) which is a weekend event involving parades, merchant setups, photo ops with King Neptune and Blackbeard the Pirate, and even a "Sea Goddess" pagent. This is a big shindig that the Navy and Coast Guard usually participate in as well. And of course, there is the lobster. For more info, visit http://www.mainelobsterfestival.com

There is LOTS of water (sea water) around Rockport which should provide ample opportunity for those wanting to dive. I'm hoping we can get a good showing of submersibles to this event, stick George in the conning tower of either a K-250 or K-350 that one of you owns, and then join the parade. Afterwards it is a perfect opportunity to set up for static display and show off your subs to the public. This is not a small event, so I expect lots of curious onlookers. Probably in the fall of 2007 I am planning on approaching the organizers of the festival to suggest they consider in someway incorporating a tribute to George as part of the festivities. If we get enough PSUBBER participation, we may be able to convince the Mayor to proclaim one day as "George Kittredge Day"? That would be fun. Also, the event sounds like it would make an excellent "family" vacation for those of you who normally miss your wives (cough...cough...) at our regular conventions, or want to bring your kids for a fun time. You will see by visiting the festival website that there are plenty of events and fun for all ages.

      Jon

How many PSUBers do we need again, to have a convention here in north Idaho?? Ya know the lakes here are amazing and we might be able to go down to Bayview, Idaho and see some navy subs if we ask nicely. Like I said before I'll make a handmade pair of snow shoes for any PSUBer that moves up here. So Joe, aren't you tired of all that hot muggy weather and the hurricanes yet??? You could bring Jay with ya. We'll make room for him and he can keep working for the Navy at Bayview. : )' You would fit in like a quill in a porcupine. What can I say, I'm a submarine half full kind of guy.
