BARE CROSSING

A Venice, Calif. boat builder put together a midget sub and attempted a 
crossing from Los Angeles to Catalina Island last September.  However, 
he was stopped by harbor patrolmen who told him that he had to get life 
preservers and proper lighting gear bedfore he could try the channel 
crossing.  The patrolmen were no doubt surprised when they stopped Bob 
Wilson, 31, in the midst of his enterprise.   When they boarded his sub, 
Wilson was lying down naked, operating the ballast pump.  "We thought he 
was in trouble," said David Agondo, watch commander.
