RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Kittrege Type Sub in Sandpoint, Idaho?

I received this reply from George Kittredge:

As you know, I built 12 submarines for VAST Inc, a firm which used to test
sonobouys for the Navy. They all had the collar around the conning tower in
order to comply with the rule of replacing the amount of metal taken out of
a hole made in the hull. The collar was 1/4" thick. Later subs all had a
3/4" insert in order to comply with the rule. The latter is better because
a pin hole leak in a weld could result in water and rust getting between the
collar and the hull. The view port under the hatch looks like a sub which I
built for Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara but his view
ports were slanted down ward and the ports on this sub do not look like they
are slanted downward. Also, two other things. The vent line from the aft
MBT goes over the view port which is a good idea. I wish I had thought of
doing it that way. And the rudder is different from the original 12 subs
which had a top and bottom V type rudder so I think this sub might have been
built from plans some one bought and they did a nice job.
