in the crew compartment and be easier to deal with?
Hi, Joe - I'm opting for SS marine cable around pulleys. Cheaper than
Teleflex!!!
As far as bulkhead penetrations, I'll be using small
bellows zap-strapped onto my cables. Similar to what motorcycle choke
cables have. Not sure if the m/cycle cable bellows will withstand the
marine environment but they're cheap enough to replace on a regular
basis.
I'll also be keeping all cockpit/bulkhead
penetrations low (when appropriate) for obvious reasons. My compensating
regs will be as low as I can get them to maintain a slight overpressure in the
cabin. Leaks will turn up as bubbles escaping rather than water sprays all
over my head.

If I recall, you are the one building something similar to Deep Flight. In
that case, the differential control surfaces you describe are just the ticket
if you are going to "fly" underwater and want that kind of maneuverability.
You have your rudders controlling motion about the longitudinal axis of the
boat where an aircraft uses them for the vertical axis. Im going for lateral
axis control only from the dive planes.
In my case, I won't need to bank at all, small course corrections with a
conventional rudder because of my speed and underwater profile should be quite
sufficient. I am after the same control profile as those old fleet type
subs.

I'm using the same type of system on my sub, I have a sitck and rudder
arrangement like on an airplane. I have foot pedals that contol
opposing side " ailerons" which turn in the opposite directions for banked
turns. The stick controls the rear rudder, which is a side to side
motion on the stick, and for accending or decending the stick is pushed
forward ( for down) and back ( for up ). This is what I have
been working on for the last few weeks on my to scale mock up.
Everything is pretty straight forward linkage, however the side to side
motion on the stick, for rudder control are miter gears so I can change that
motion perpendicularly. An on one of the foot pedals I needed to use
two meshing gears to reverse the motion with a counter shaft, so I could get
a better angle (leverage) on the pedal. All these motions are turning
thru hull shafts in a rotating manner.

Since my boat as designed is primarily a snorkel boat on
the tiny diesel, dynamic flow over dive planes is critical to
control.
I have in mind a mechanical linkage system similar to
aircraft control surfaces with either a bell crank and pulley system or
better yet a pushrod and torque tube system.
Individual control of the bow and stern planes as in the
WWII boats is not really practical, so I am planning on an
interconnection via either a single lever or a side mounted wheel. Very
simple stuff, no hydraulics or electric motors.
I welcome comments and suggestions as every time I put
something out, my design is improved tremendously as a result of the
input.
