Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Movie submarines

Shipmates,

"Above us the Waves" and "Commander X-1" are two different movies.
"Above us" is a historically accurate accounting of the X-Craft raid to
sink the German
Cruiser Tirpitz. Black and white, probably about 50 years old, starring
JBritish Actor Sir John Mills, used actual X-Craft (4 to 5-man British
midget submarines).
Accurate sets of interior of submarines.

"X-1" is a much newer (20 years?) , color, Hollywood movie rather loosly
based on the raid and using Hollywood (read unrealistic) versions of the
X-Craft. James
Cann as I recall. See "Above us" for historical and technical accuracy,
see "X-1" for the fun of it.

My thoughts,

Doug Farrow

In german the old one was called "X-Boote greifen an " (X-boats attacks)
- and the boots are numbered from X1 to X5. (X1 and X2 in real live are
no x-craft numbers - and X3-and X4 are x-craft prototypes - never use
for operations.. operational X-crafts start with X-5)

Was from a book of CET Warren and James Benson with Donald Sinden, John
Gregson. The story was more or less correct - there was no mention that
the lost one x-boats on the raid during towing with the long towing
line and crew - because the heavy steel towing line broke and force the
boat in the deep of the northatlantic. This x-boat is still missing up
today.

For the movie they use real x-crafts in 1947 or so

The Margenaut (Submanaut) was used on the film movie "Underwater around
the World"

Even the "Tigerhai " was used in a Edgar Wallance movie.

"Sgt.Pepers" was used in a short 5 Minutes movie called "real storys"..
(But this was more a report than a holywood style movie with a story.. )

best regards Carsten
