RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] What it means (Re: KM-350 MOTORS)

Minn Kota has quoted me $203.00 for part number 2317051 which is a 36v 101# thrust motor. Part number 2316288 is the same motor with the bearing saver. It is $213.00. The props are $35, and the shafts are $15.00.

Hello Doug,

I’m interested in the motors heads only, the part number they gave me for the 101 lb thrust motor head is 2316288 and they quoted me 224$ each, in addition you are going to need the propeller, the prop part. No. is 2331160 and they sell for 36$, they explained me that their 101 lb equals 1.79HP, also they explained me that all their motors are designed to go 5mph top, the difference between getting a small or a big motor is going to be the capacity to push more weigh and the acceleration, the question is ¿is your submarine heavy? Because using a big motor you will need more power to run it and your autonomy is going to be shorter. Now if you are going to use this motors I suggest you do the same that I’m going to do, these motors are designed to be waterproof but their not design to resist pressure, so you have to install this motors inside a pod to protect them from underwater pressure, as for the dc controllers, I’m planning to design it using a microcontroller, in this case a microchip pic16f877, because this chip has 3 a/d converters, so you can also monitor other variables like cabin pressure, depth, etc. the initial design is only going to control the motors and then I’m planning to improve it along the time, I haven’t got to the motors installing yet, I’m planning to install the motors next month, if you are willing to wait I will send you the schematics and the software (for programming the pic) and some instructions so you can assembly it.

Ps. Ron, there are the models for the motors and the props, see if you can get a better price and let us know.

Regards

Daniel

I am ready to buy 2 motors myself.  What model of Minn Kota is that? Were you able to work any discount? Are you going to buy the complete units or just the motor heads?  What are you going to go without speed controllers?

The MotorGuide factory is in my town (Tulsa, OK), but I have had no luck getting a hold of the right sales rep yet.  I was going to try to get a deal on some refurbished motor heads or even better yet see if they would sponsor me some units.  According to one of their sales reps their digital units have the speed controller integrated into the motor head.  They also have a unit with remote controlled steering.  That unit might be able to be easily air or oil compensated. See: http://www.motorguide.com/index.pl/motorguide_tour_es

I have also look into  Minkota's RipTide Saltwater with 101 lbs thrust, on 36 volts, that draws 37 amps at full power. Jim at www.trollingmotorparts.com quoted me $223 each for the motor head only.  He said they have other people were using these on submarines too.  Last year the price was $260 each.

Best Regards,

Doug Jackson

I have contacted a Minn Kota sales agent and he helped me pick the motors,
after 10 emails we concluded that my best choice was to buy 4 motors instead
of 3, because they don’t have any 3HP motors I will have to use 2 1.79HP
motors to reach the desired power, the thing is that these motors are 36V
and the 1/2HP are 12V so I'm going to buy four identical motors all 1.79HP
and redesign the electrics for the sub to 36 volts, increasing the power to
the side thrusters should not be a problem because for this motors design
I'm not increasing speed, I'm increasing acceleration. What do you guys
think? I think it will work

Ps: thanks for the link to the converting units page, it's very helpful

Daniel

Thanks for the link.

What was Minn-Kota say when they are asked about this?  Exactly
what does the pounds of thrust number mean?  Is it pounds per
second?
