Chip,
Although an oval tube would be better then a box
built with flat plates, it wouldn't make a very good hull at all.
The strength of the flatter side would be much less then the sides with tighter
radius. When building a round hull, it's very important to keep it as true
round a possible. A K-350 has a thirty
six inch diameter hull is supposed to be held to no more then 1/8 inch out of
round.

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Hull Shape
question
Hello everyone,
A
quick question on hull shape. I understand that the best shape for the
pressure hull will be a sphere or a round tube with braces and with domed end
caps. How much strength is lost with an oval tube? Imagine pushing down
on a cardboard tube a bit. Flatten it out lengthwise just a little. It
would have bracing inside as well. Any advice on this?
